Our review of ‘Kinky Boots’ starring Brendon Urie

By June 14, 2017No Comments

On Saturday, June 10th, I went to see Brendon Urie portray the role of Charlie Price in the Broadway production of Kinky Boots. I’ve been to many Broadway shows and have been in musicals myself through my high school, but I’m going to be honest, I didn’t know what to expect watching someone who is so well-known as the frontman of Panic! At The Disco make his Broadway debut; considering the styles are polar opposites of each other. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Brendon did a phenomenal job playing the role.

Just in case you have never heard of this show before discovering that Brendon Urie would be starring in it, here’s a short plot summary. After the death of his father, Charlie Price inherits the family business, a shoe factory called Price & Son in Northampton, England. But he has no interest in making shoes. With the factory in such dire financial straits, he must lay off 15 employees he’s known his entire life. However, after an encounter with the drag queen cabaret singer, Lola, it inspires Charlie to try to save the factory from closure by producing erotic footwear for the drag queen community.

The hardest part of any actor is to make their character believable. Every time an actor steps onto a stage they are no longer themselves, they must become a completely different person; and to make it harder that person isn’t real. It’s their job to make them real. At some point during the show I completely forgot that it was Brendon Urie on stage, I was convinced that the person speaking and singing was Charlie Price. Brendon did a phenomenal job at taking a person written on paper and bringing him to life.

Songs aren’t added into a musical just because it’s a musical. The whole point behind having songs in a musical is because the character’s emotions exceed words so they must sing it to get their point across. Brendon Urie got his point across beautifully and poured his heart and soul into the performance. He even made me cry during his rendition of Soul of A Man. Everyone knows that Brendon has a killer range and incredible voice, but to hear him sing in a very different setting than his fans are used to was just amazing. It shows how diverse he is as a performer.

Overall, Brendon Urie gave a fantastic performance that should not be missed if you have the opportunity to see it. Kinky Boots is a fun show that’s full of humor, divas and pure talent from every single member of the cast. Even if you can’t make it to see Brendon Urie as Charlie Price, if you get the chance to go see this show, you definitely should. It won’t fail to bring a smile to your face.

Brendon Urie will be playing Charlie Price through August 6th.
